Big Sky, which is set in Montana, pairs a private investigator named Cassie (Bunbury) with a police officer named Jenny (Winnick) to solve crimes with the help of their eccentric front desk clerk Denise (Dedee Pfeiffer).
The first season’s issue was that it was amusingly chaotic yet a little too gloomy. The first season picked up on the kidnapping and murder of women by a truck driver, which raised a lot of questions about cultural sensitivity in a state where indigenous women are kidnapped and murdered in disproportionately high numbers.
Ryan Phillippe’s character, who was killed off in the pilot, was a real shock at the time. John Carroll Lynch also had a quirky-horror part in that season. Several recognizable characters were introduced in the second season’s mystery, which involved a drug cartel, including Jamie-Lynn Sigler from The Sopranos, The League’s Janina Gavankar, and budget Tom Hardy (Logan Marshall-Green).

Jensen Ackles, who takes over for Patrick Gallagher as the sheriff in season three, turns out to be that element. He has a strong impact right away. Such a voice! Texas charm, indeed! Those jeans! In Big Sky, he pulls a true Heather Locklear, enlivening the scene and giving everything a bit more zip. Even better, he doesn’t join the Cassie and Jenny team as an adversarial, by-the-book type of sheriff, which is a relief. He is a member of the crew! You can hop right into the third season without having to see the first two. The mystery is essentially confined within itself.
